Shoe Clinic Asics 5K Series

Taking place at North Hagley Park on Tuesday evenings in January and February, this is one of the most popular and established athletic events in Christchurch. Each evening, there are races for competitive runners, recreational runners and walkers as well as children 14 years and under.

With the support of our sponsors there is a great range of spot prizes each evening and valuable series performance prizes for runners in the registered races.

North Hagley Park is in the centre of the city, making access very easy and the entry fee is purposefully kept low to encourage people and families to compete in all five runs. The Shoe Clinic Asics 5K Series is a great opportunity to help keep in trim shape over the summer holidays and to see some of Christchurch’s best runners in action in the registered races.

The Shoe Clinic Asics 5K Series consists of 5 weeks of events for runners and walkers wanting to run or walk in a 5KM event. Hosted by the Port Hills Athletic Club in the beautiful Hagley Park, Christchurch.

  • The Asics Shoe Clinic 5K Series during January and February this summer will be an event for fully vaccinated athletes. We have had to make that restriction to be compliant with the Covid-19 Protection Framework (traffic lights). As usual there will be three races, in this order.

    A 1.6 km children’s race

A competitive 5K race for faster athletes

A 5K fun run for runners and walkers of all ages.

So, how will the vaccination requirement work?Any competitor in one of the three events, who is older than 12 years and 3 months, must show their My Vaccine Pass to take part.

There will be a fenced area called the Race Zone with two entrances. All competitors enter the Race Zone by showing their vaccine pass to the to the official at one of the entrances. Supporters are welcome in the Race Zone, too, so long as they show their vaccine pass, or are children under 12 years 3 months. The Race Zone will contain the registration tent, BBQ, and sponsors’ displays.

The finish chute will end inside the Race Zone. The 1.6 km children’s race is free to enter. An official with a clip board takes names near to the registration tent. Any youngsters who want to run in the children’s race – and who are over 12 years 3 months – have shown their vaccine pass to enter the Race Zone, and don’t need to show it again. But our vaccine pass system is stricter for the 5K races.

The Competitive Race is an Athletics NZ sanctioned event. It costs $5 to run in each week’s event, plus there is a one-off $10 sanctioned fee that covers all of the five races in the series. Athletes who are registered athletes are exempt the sanctioned fee as this is covered by their registration. The Fun Run also costs $5 to run in each week’s event, but there is no additional $10 sanctioned fee. Entries and payments can be made online for either of the 5K races, or entries and payment can be made on the day.

Every competitor for a 5K race must complete an entry form – whether they have entered online or not – and take it to the registration tent. Even though your vaccine pass was sighted to enter the Race Zone, your vaccine pass will be scanned when you hand over your entry form.

Please click on the link below which will take you to the Port Hills Athletic Home Page then scroll down to see you see the five races and click on the link to enter.

The course uses a loop of approximately 1.6KM although this has been measured for the 5KM events to ensure the distance and reflected times are as accurate as possible taking into account the start and finish. The surface is all concrete apart from the finish which has a 50m grass surface. Runners/walkers can elect to run on the grass beside the concrete path if they prefer.

    POST RACE

After the race, help yourself to some of the free refreshments or visit our sponsors stands for information about their products including running gear.

After the last runners/walkers are in, spot prizes for the 5KM fun run/walk are presented (each night). On the final night for the series, the performance prizes and trophies are presented for the Athletic New Zealand Registered runners who have competed in the registered runners race.
